A Frightening New Enemy and a Powerful Ally
As
Ahriman, the god of Darkness is released so are his minions of
monstrous slaves. The most dangerous and powerful set against the
Prince is known as “the Hunter.” Once a human prince himself, the
Hunter was raised in opulent decadence and detached from the day-to-day
world. His only passion was for the drama and brutality of the hunt,
but soon passion grew to obsession. After killing every variety of
beast known, he grew bored and too bold. Recognizing an opportunity
Ahriman appeared to him and offered a bargain, a hunt against the most
dangerous beasts the world has to offer in return for his soul.
Foolishly he accepted and was transformed from man into demonic beast
and was hunted by men from all over the world. His all-consuming rage
made easy work of the hunters set against him, but also bound him to
Ahriman for eternity.

The
team behind Luminous Arc is working hard with SEGA on ‘7th Dragon’ for
the Nintendo DS in an effort to ensure the game hits its proposed
Spring 2009 release date in Japan. Its official website has now been launched,
and comes complete with a teaser flash video and two very impressive
versions of the same tune – one being of an 8-bit, retro style.

The producer of this new title is Reiko Kodama of Phantasy Star and
Skies of Arcadia fame, the Director is none other than Kazuya Niinou,
formerly of Atlus where he created both Trauma Centre and Etrian
Odyssey, the main composer is another SEGA fan favourite Yuzo Koshiro,
who scored Shenmue and Shinobi, plus the character designer is a doujin
moe artist called Jun’ya Ota. Considering this was Image Epoch’s
‘Project DF’, the last of the remaining ‘unknown’ games it was working
on, many believe its theme will be similar to SEGA’s old classic Dragon Force.

But most of that we already knew from the leaked website
translations previously reported on. Below is the fresh information
that has arrived courtesy of this week’s Famitsu magazine and
translation work from the folk over at the NeoGAF forums:

• New game from Niinou, the director of Etrian Odyssey
• Command-based battle encounters
• Four characters in a party at one time
• Simple game concept: kill all the dragons
• There are seven classes in the game (Rogue, Mage, Fighter, Princess, Knight, Samurai, Healer)
• For each class there are four different appearances
• There are skill trees for each of the classes
• The stats include LIFE, MANA, ATK, POW, DEF, INT, SPD
• While moving around, the top screen is a top-down map view, while the bottom screen is a conquest map

It’s that time again. As the year draws to a close, so begins a new
season of hardcourt hoop action. And with a new basketball season comes
a new round of basketball video games. This time around, we’re looking
at NBA Live 08 from EA Sports. The general consensus is that, in the rush to hit the next-gen era last year, EA’s previous Livegame
“dropped the ball”, so to speak, committing a foul against NBA fans
everywhere. So, was the EA team able to get its heads back in the game
this time around?

Well, first the good news. NBA Live 08 is definitely
not as bad as last year’s entry into the franchise. Right from the
start, you can tell that the developers put a lot of effort into trying
to fix the issues players had with NBA Live 07’s next-gen
debut. For starters, the game’s visuals have been dramatically
improved. Everything from the floors to the crowds to swaying of the
players’ jerseys looks better. The animations have also been
significantly improved as well. Players don’t move around like they
were crafted in Geppetto’s workshop alongside Pinocchio, although they
still do feel a little wooden on the court.

NBA Live 08 sports a new in-game camera, too, making the action
on the court look and feel a lot more like a televised match. This also
helps improve the gameplay somewhat, as the wild angles from last
year’s game seemed to be thrown in to try a look “hip” instead of
actually serving any real function.

The broadcast experience is also improved, thanks to
commentary from the likes of veteran announcer Marv Albert and former
player Steve Kerr. Ernie Johnson and Greg Anthony also return to pick
up announcing duties during the All Star events. All four announcers
really seem to work the mic this time around, as opposed to some
previous sports games where the announcers just seem to phone it in for
a quick buck. Add to all of that the continuing relationship EA has
with ESPN and all of the ESPN-branded content resulting from it, and NBA Live 08 actually does a respectable job of putting together a re-creation of televised NBA matches.

So, at first glance, it looks like EA scored with a slam dunk, right?
Not so fast there, Sparky. Unfortunately, there’s that pesky little
term we video-game fans like to refer to as “gameplay”. A game can have
all the eye candy in the world, and sound as sweet as the New York
Philharmonic, but if the gameplay is bad, then it’s still nothing more
than a nice-looking waste of time. I’ll go on the record right now and
say that NBA Live 08’s gameplay is much better than NBA Live 07’s
was. Of course, that’s also akin to me saying I can wipe the floor in
half-court hoops against the neighbor’s four-year-old kid down the
street. Basically, it’s not saying all that much when taken in
perspective.
